Turek
President
Community Member, Cambridge

Sonia has been a CCA board member since 2017, and is currently board president. A New York native, she first moved to Philadelphia to earn a Masters in Library Science at Drexel University specializing in children’s lit, then to Boston to be Head of Children’s Services at the Somerville Public Library. Getting kids interested in reading was rewarding, but she had a deep interest in writing, and returned to school to get a Masters in Journalism at B.U. Sonia became a reporter for several newspapers, ending at The Boston Herald, where she worked for 15 years in various capacities, including city and Sunday editor, retiring as Deputy Managing Editor, Arts and Features. She continued to write, on wine, food and travel. Since then, Sonia has devoted herself to board and volunteer work at local nonprofits, including Rosie’s Place, No Kid Hungry, Community Cooks and Community Servings. Passionate about food, she recently received a degree from Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. Growing up in the Bronx, Sonia feels very lucky to have spent many childhood summers away from the city at camp. It’s an experience she wishes all city kids could have, and, as a board member, Sonia’s dedicated to help make that happen.
